Humidity-Climatic requirement for wheat

50-60% humidity is optimum for wheat crop. If relative humidity is less than this then moisture loss occurs due to heavy evapo-transpiration and it results in more water requirement for irrigation. Disease infestation increases when there is high humidity coupled with high temperature.

Rainfall-Climatic requirement for wheat

Wheat is cultivated in the region where annual precipitation occurs from 25 to 175 cm, though 75% wheat area falls where annual rainfall precipitation occurs between 37.5 to 87.5 cm. Region with 62.54 to 87 cm rainfall are most suitable for wheat cultivation and out of this 10-15 cm rainfall is required when crop is in the field. Rainfall and snowfall at the time of maturity cause severe loss to wheat crop affecting yield and seed quality adversely.

Climatic requirement for Wheat- temperature

Wheat is crop of cool environment. However, it requires different temperatures at different stages of plant growth and development. Temperature requirement may slightly differ from one variety to another at the time of germination, however, general minimum  temperature  is required from 3.5-5.50 c and  optimum 20-250 and maximum temperature is 350 . On temperature below or above to optimum, germination of seed decreases slowly.

Wheat growing zones in India

Considering the variable agro-climatic conditions, the country has divided in six wheat growing zones. Development of varieties as well production technologies are being done as per the requirement of particular zone to faster the pace of yield enhancement.
