Soybean is the most important oilseed crop of India. It is currently grwon in 10.6 million ha  with an annual production of 12.69 million tons. It contiributes to about 43% of the total oilseed production in the country and about 25% to the total edible oil pool. However, the productivity of the crop is just 1.2 tons/ha which is significantly lower as comopared to world average (1.8 t/ha).
