Advantages of Integrated Rice Fish System


Rice and fish are considered symbiosis and basic foods in South East Asia, where the practice of fish-rice culture is most developed. Integrated Agriculture-Aquaculture (IAA) has been widely promoted as means for addressing issues of rural hunger and poverty. The principle objectives of those promoting IAA enhance the production of fish and other crops for human consumption through the synergetic interaction of pond, field and livestock, upgrading the household nutritional of farm families and increasing their income.

 

Advantages


  • Contribute to increase the diversified food supply.
  • The area where fish culture in pond are not feasible for reasons.
  • Stocking of fish and paddy fields more effectively uses the available food and space.
  • The activity of feeding fish and their excretion improve paddy fertility.
  • Extra labor requirement is minimum.
  • If crop is long maturing simultaneous fish culture provide an earlier financial return.
  • Efficient production of high carbohydrate (rice) and high protein (fish) food from same area of land.
  • Fish act as a biological control of rice pests.
  • Higher level of water management for fish improve conditions for plant crop.
  • Reduce the production costs as paddy bottom becomes soft and clean after fish culture.
