 Agronomic Practices for Late Planting of Sugarcane


    In North Indian States Sugarcane is normally planted after harvesting of Rabi Season crops(Mustard, Wheat, Gram etc.), sometimes as late as in May which need following considerations for good yield.

Useful Varieties-CO 1148, CO 336, CO J 58, CO 307

       The cane portion to be is used- 1/3 or ½ of the upper portion of the cane.

Planting Time- April-May

Setts to be used- Three budded, Pre-germinated in nursery under trash cover.

Seed Rate- 50 per cent more than the normal.

Spacing - 60-75 cm between the rows.

Field Preparation-The field must be irrigated soon after of harvesting of wheat crop and well tilth should be prepared.

Germination- Germination may be enhanced by soaking of setts 2-4 hours in plain water prier to planting (only in case of direct planting of setts which are not pre-sprouted). Light irrigation soon after planting (5 cm deep in furrows) should be given.

Fertilization- 70-75 kg nitrogen per hectare should be applied before end of June.

Irrigation- One to two extra irrigations are required over the normal.

Plant Protection-Application of Chlorpyriphos should be done against termite, shoot borers and other insect-pests.

Harvesting - Feb-March.
