I extend a cordial welcome to al l par t icipant s in this review and planning meet ing for Asian Regional Research on Grai n Legumes. Thanks are due to ACI A R for suggest ing this meet ing to review progress in grain legume research that has taken place almost exactly 2 years since the Consul tat ive Group Meet ing for Asian Regional Research on Grai n Legumes was held at ICRISAT to discuss the futur e di rect ion of grain legume research in As i a , in conjunct ion wi th IRRI ' s Rice Farming Systems Pr o g r am. Thanks are especially due to A D A B for asking ACIAR to organize this meet ing and for prov iding the necessary funds . ACIAR or iginal l y invi ted ICRI S A T and I R R I t o cosponsor this present meet ing to examine the progress of research on groundnut s and pigeonpeas in T h a i l a n d , Indonesia, and Indi a but , since t h e n , they have generously expanded the meet ing to include chickpea, which is not a crop in which they are di rect ly interested, and to include count r ies where they presently have no contacts. As part of this review, ACI A R staff were anxious to have an in-dept h discussion on methods of ident i fying  and interpret ing genotype x envi ronmental interact ions in grai n legume t r ials. This has also been provided for in the p r o g r am.
