Ghujhia weevil
Scientific name: Tanymecus indicus (Faust)
Description
Weevils are earthen grey in colure and measure about 7 mm in length and 2.5 mm in width. Forewings are oblong, hind wings more or less triangular, but the weevils cannot fly. Their mouthparts are light brown and are practically concealed beneath the head. Larvae are fleshy and creamy white.
Nature of damage
The damage is caused by the adult weevils only and they cut the germinating seedling at ground levels and often crop has to be resown. The adults feed on leaves and tender shoots of the plants.
Control measures
- Plough the fields in summer to expose and kill the pupae.
- Dust carbaryl or malathion 5 per cent @ 25Kg per ha.
- Apply phorate (10G) @ 10kg/ha in soil or spray phosphamidon @ o.3 kg/ha.
