Background: With growing human populations and ever decreasing areas of land suitable for lateral expansion of agriculture, higher production of biomass per unit area is essential for future security of food and other agricultural products in the world. The global population is estimated to reach around 11 billion and in India it is estimated to reach 1.2 billion during 2011. The demand of food grain in India is expected to be 253 mt from the current production of 219.2 mt (2009-10). Thus, by just less than two years we have to enhance around 34 mt and this is an arduous task. The similar picture is in global level also. The use of untreated seeds and some invasive seeds, imbalanced nutrient use with less attention to manures and biofertilizers, rapidly decreasing water resources coupled with inefficient weed and other pests management supplies are becoming less reliable and the environment increasingly polluting. Plant growth, surface and groundwater availability are being adversely affected, situations which climate changes are likely to worsen. The diversification of crops are limiting because of higher thinking power of farmers as well as lesser awareness to many agriculturists. In the major parts of tropics and subtropics, the agricultural productivities of soils, of water, of nutrients, and hence of the rural livelihoods, are not being sustained. The major driver of economic growth and food security, agriculture, needs to have a turn around.
Over the last one or two decades, hardly a paper is written on agriculture which did not incorporate the word "sustainable" and the movement and findings lead to the concept of Conservation Agriculture (CA). The planners and policy makers are optimistic that, with continued application and investment, there will be major developments in the next ten years or so, as biotechnology and other new tools are effectively utilized. The rapid urbanization and market expansion with an increased demand for crop and livestock products is encouraging a shift from subsistence farming to market-oriented production, and opening opportunities for income improvement for the rural poor. Sixty Percent (60 %) of the Nations population are depending on agriculture and because rich biodiversity huge scope is in India to improve the situation but because of lesser attention on agriculture, even the mass media also, the agricultural development is aging with a tortoise footstep.
To achieve this accelerated rainbow development, new paradigms are required like System of Intensification (BMP- Best Management Practice) which would effectively address whole systems with improve soil plant and farmers’ thinking; more effectively combine new methodologies and traditional knowledge; and more effectively integrate farmers and communities into research, development, and extension. Such a combination would consist of the best variety for a given environment, incorporated into an improved soil and grown using appropriate crop management, and both the technology and the desired outcomes would be appropriate to the farming people through the sustainable agriculture practices.
In spite of the generally poor performance of the agricultural systems especially in the tropics and developing countries due to low inputs, poor management, little diversity and in spite of tremendous threats caused by natural resources degradation, climate change, conflicts, urbanization and globalization, ill effects of chemical agriculture, there are opportunities, which could be achieved through intensification (lowering the yield gap), diversification, and expanding markets for agricultural products, and through measures that add value and secure a healthy environment along the value chain continuum. Diversified systems producing high-value products could lead also to a leap in income improvement. There is also more demand for high quality and nutritious products that can reduce risks to human health, and can lead to improved diets from crop and animal food sources for children and rural women. System intensified agriculture production can help combat poverty, improve upon gender relations, support sustainable use of natural resources towards cleaner environment, and provide an economic cushion in bad years or unpredicted events due to climate change.
With this backdrop the Crop and Weed Society (CWSS), BCKV invites relevant contributions from the agriculture scientists, scholars, technologists, the industry and policy planners in its call for the International Seminar on “System Intensification towards Food & Environmental Security”
Contributions are invited for both oral and poster presentations on the following themes related to System intensification in Agriculture; Horticulture, Ag. Engineering, Mix Farming systems, ITK and Supporting Policies
1) Biodiversity; Invasive plants; Seed production systems, GM / Biotech planting materials; Evaluation of cultivars better adapted to climate changes
2) Sustainable use of the natural resources for nutrients, Organic farming, Integrated nutrient management; Biofertilizers
3) Strategies of Water resources in system intensification
4) Invasive pests (Weed/Insect/Pathogens/other pests) threat and their environment safe management
5) Methodologies for producing high quality, hygienic and safe products
6) ITK and farmers innovative methodologies in System Intensification
7) Options for income generation through Diversification of Crops/ Value addition
Socio-economic, policy and market implications, including Institutional/Corporate NGOs arrangements for livelihood security
