There will be greater demand for phosphorus during the very early stages of crop growth as the energy need of young seedlings is high.

Hence, phosphorus deficiency symptoms are more pronounced in young plants.Therefore, the plants should be examined for phosphorus deficiency during the early stages of crop growth.

Severe deficiencies of phosphorus are usually characterized by stunted growth of plants and dark red or purple coloration develop on the sheaths and blades of older leaves.

Observe the response to flowering with increased rates of phosphorus

Severe deficiencies of phosphorus also delays flowering in pearl millet (Fig.).
