Plant Biotechnology in Isabgol crop improvement

Isabgol is a important medicinal crop. India is the largest producer and exporter of this crop, about 70 to 80% of produce is exported to other countries. The main problem in this crop is low yield and to improve the yield plant biotechnology play a vital role. In plant biotechnology molecular markers are used in crop improvement and this is known as molecular breeding and using this techniques we can easily improve the yield and quality of this crop and India will remain first in the field of isabgol production and export.

Isabgol crop improvement

Actually the economic yield of isabgol is the husk of grain which has good medicinal value. It is used for the treatment of constipation, control the blood cholesterol levels by preventing its absorption in intestine, helps to prevent heart attacks by regulating the serum cholesterol and it also helps to regulate the blood glucose levels and insulin response by decreasing the absorption of fats and glucose.

Husk contributes a very little part in biological yield of isabgol. As we know conventional breeding has a little scope for development of a new variety rather than biotechnology including transgenic breeding, recombinant DNA technology, tissue culture etc.
