Plant Population in Chickpea

Plant Population

Chickpea spacing on
Broadbed and Furrows

Chickpea plant shows high plasticity to variations in plant density. However, there is a distinct trend for higher biological yield and lower harvest index with increasing density.

  • Chickpea is grown at a plant density of 33 plants m-2 in a flat- or broadbed-and- furrow system .
  • The plant density ranges from 25 to 30 plants m-2 in a ridge-and-furrow system.

The optimum plant population depends upon the varieties and the environmental conditions under which the crop is grown.

Tall and erect cultivars gave high seed yield at a higher plant density (33 to 50 plants m-2) due to their apical pods.
