Gall midge: Orseolia oryzae Wood - Mason (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae)

Damage symptoms:
• The maggot feed on the apical point of the central shoot.
• It resembles as an onion leaf glistens in the field and central shoot is converted to long tubular structure known as galls or silver shoots.

Management:
Cultural practices:
- Use resistant varieties Shakti, Phalugna, Mahaveer, Latha, MO-4, and Netravati (zone 10)
- Early planting of paddy,
Biological control:
- Wolf Spider Pardosa psuedoannulata and Lynx spider Oxyopes javanus feeds on maggots
Chemical control:
ETL: One gall/m2 or 5% affected tillers
- Spray Monocrtophos 35 EC @ 2ml/l at nursery stage.
- Application of phorate 10G@ 4kg/acre or carbofuran 3G@ 10kg/acre insecticides in presence of thin film of water in the field
- Application of phorate 10 G @ 75g/or carbofuron 3 G @ 1.25kg/seed bed followed by light irrigation.
- Application of carbofuron 3G @4kg/acre or phorate 10G @5kg/acre or Quinolphos 4% @12kg/acre to soil.
