Pigeonpea is cultivated on both red and black soils
Farmer practice
Machine
- Pigeonpea is sensitive to water logging and requires a well-drained soil. It does not grow well in saline soil, but can withstand drought reasonably well.
- Land is prepared by at least one plowing during the dry season followed by 2 or 3 harrowings. Organic manure may be applied 2-4 weeks before sowing.
- Contour broad-beds and furrows or a ridge-and-furrow system are useful in preventing water logging.
- Pigeonpea emergence may be affected due to crusting. Breaking the crust by mechanical means or a light irrigation helps seedling emergence.
