Tundu

Causal Organism:  Coynebacterium michiganense var tritici

Description

Quit frequently the ear-cockle nematode is associated with a bacterium (Corynebacterium michiganense var tritici) causing a disease a called Tundu or yellow year rot.

                                                                                                                                                              
Symptoms

This disease is characterized by presence of bright yellow slime or gum in the emerging inflorescence, stem and leaves. The gum from sticky layers between glumes, stem and sheath interfering with growth and resulting in distribution of these parts.

Control Measures
  • These can also be removed by the floatation in 2 per cent common salt solution as they float on the solution because of their lighter weight.
  • Precaution must be taken to wash the wet seeds in plain water and then to dry before sowing.
