Variety & its Characteristics of Turnip

Asiatic types

  • Pusa Kanchan

  1. The skin is red with creamy yellow flesh
  2. Fruit has excellent flavour and taste.
  • Pusa Sweti

  1. Variety suitable for sowing in October.
  2. It has attractive pure white roots.
  3. Crop matures in 45-50 days after sowing and gives an average yield of 20-30 t/ha.
  • Early Milan Red Top

  1. It is an extra early and high yielding variety.
  2. Crop matures in 45 days.
  3. The roots are deep flat with purplish red tops and white underneath.
  4. The flesh is pure white, well-grained, crisp and mildly pungent.
  • Pusa Chandrima

  1. It is an early maturing and high yielding variety.
  2. The skin is smooth, pure white, fine grained with sweet and tender flesh.
  3. The crop matures in 55-60 days after sowing.

Temperate Types

  • Pusa Swarnima

  1. The roots are flattish round, 6-7 cm long and 7-8 cm in diameter with creamy yellow skin, flesh amber-coloured
  2. Fine-textured and mild-flavoured. The tops are medium and not very deeply cut.
  3. Crop matures in 65-70 days.
  • Purple Top White Globe

  1. Most popular variety of the temperate group.
  2. It is a heavy yielding large rooted cultivar.
  3. The roots are nearly round, upper part purple, lower portion creamy
  4. Flesh is white, firm, crisp and mildly sweet-flavoured.

  2. Leaves are small and light green.
