Characteristics of sesamum varieties
Some of the recommended varieties of sesamum are described below.
1. T-4
- It is recommended for growing in Uttar Pradesh for its alluvial sesamum growing areas.
- It is a moderate branching variety and takes about 100 days to mature.
- Its yield is 6-7 quintals per hectare, having 52% oil.
- Seeds are white in colour.
2. T-12
- It is a selection from local material of Almora, Uttar Pradesh.
- Plant is, 145 cm in height with 4-6 branches.
- It matures in 85 days.
- Seeds are white in colour.
- It yields 6-10 quintals per hectare, having 53% oil.
- It is suitable for central region of Uttar Pradesh.
3. T-13
- It is a white seeded variety.
- It takes 90 days to mature.
- Plant height is 130 cm with 4-5 branches.
- It gives a yield of about 6 quintals per hectare.
- Its seeds contain 50% oil.
4. Pratap
- It was released by Rajasthan for heavier soil tracts of Rajasthan.
- Plants are erect type, about 85-90 cm in height.
- It matures in 100-105 days.
- It is white seeded and has an yield potential of 6-10 quintals per hectare.
- It contains 50% oil.
5. TC-2S
- It is recommended for cultivation in lighter soil tracts of Rajasthan.
- Plant is 90-95 cm tall, with 4-5 branches.
- It matures in 80-85 days.
- Seeds are white with 48.4 % oil content.
- It yields 4 to 4.5 quintals per hectare.
6. Punjab Til No.1
- It is an early maturing variety.
- It matures in 80-85 days.
- Seeds are bold and white in colour and contain 50% oil.
- It yields about 500 kg/hectare
7. N-32
- This variety was developed at Jawahar Lal Nehru Krishi Vishwavidalaya, Jabalpur.
- It is an erect type of plant having a few branches.
- It is a multi-capsule variety.
- It matures within 95-100 days.
- Seeds are white in colour with 53% oil.
- It yields about 770 kg/hectare;
8. IT-7 (Tapi)
- It was released for entire kharif sesamum growing area of Madhya Pradesh, including Bundelkhand and Baghelkhandregions of the state.
- It takes 85 days to mature.
- Seeds are white bold with 54% oil.
10. No-1.28
- It is erect and branched with alternate phyllotaxy.
- It is a single capsuled variety and matures in about 100 days.
- Seeds are light brown, medium in size with an oil content of 50.5 per cent.
- It is moderately resistant to cercospora leaf spot.
- An average crop yields about 650 kg/hectare.
11. G-35
- It is erect and branched with opposite phyllotaxy.
- It takes 95 days to mature.
- The seeds are white, bold and have 52.5% oil.
- Its average yield is about 500 kg/ hectare.
12. G-5
- It is erect, unbranched, and has opposite phyllotaxy.
- It takes 85 days to mature.
- Seeds are white, bold and contain 52.5% oil.
- The average yield is about 550 kg/ hectare.
13. Patan-64
- This variety matures in 90-100 days.
- Plants are 1.1- 1.3 m in height.
- The average number of capsules per plant is 50.
- The arrangement of capsules on the stem is alternate.
- Seeds are white in colour and contain 48% oil.
- Its yield potential is 5-9 quintals/hectare.
14. Patan-65
- This variety matures in about 100 days.
- Seeds are of brown colour and contain about 49% oil.
- Its yield potential is 5-8 quintals/ha.
- It is suitable for growing in north and south Gujarat.
15. Purva-1
- It is a medium maturing variety.
- It matures in 120 days.
- Its average yield is 400 kg/ha.
- Seeds contain 50% oil.
16. Mrug-1
- It matures in 85-90 days.
- It contains 52% oil.
- It is suitable for Rajkot area of Gujarat.
- It is tolerant to blight and wilt diseases.
- Its average yield is 450-500 kg/hectare.
17. GuJarat No-11
- It has a dwarf growth habit, 3-5 branches and high capsules bearing capacity.
- It is a white seeded variety.
- It is resistant to blight and wilt diseases as well as less susceptible to leaf roller.
- Its average yield is 800 kg/ hectare.
18. Gouri
- This variety matures in 90 days, plants are tall and well branched.
- Seeds are medium, brown and smooth and contain 50% oil.
- It is suitable for growing in Kharif as well as rabi seasons in Andhra Pradesh.
- Its yield potential is 6-10 quintals/hectare.
19. Madhavi
- It is a short duration variety.
- It attains a height of 85 to 105 cm with erect stems.
- The crop is ready for harvest within 70-75 days.
- Seeds are medium in size and light brown in colour.
- Oil content varies from 44.7 to 50.8 per cent.
20. TMV-2
- This variety matures in 80 days.
- It is suitable for cold weather.

21. TMV-3
- Its seeds are of brownish-black and contain 50% oil.
- It is resistant to wilt and shoot borers.

22. TMV-4

23. Phule Till No.1
- It matures in 90-95 days.
- Plants are tall (120 cm).

- It is suitable for growing in central and western Maharashtra.

24. TMV -5
