Spaced Transplanting Technique in sugarcane

Spaced Transplanting Technique (STP):

In order to have quick multiplication rate a new system of sugarcane transplanting termed ‘Spaced Transplanting Technique’ (STP) was developed at the Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research, Lucknow.

  • Settlings are raised in a nursery bed using single bud setts. An area of about 35 m2 is required to raise the nursery.

  • About 6 week old settlings are transplanted vertically in fully fertilized and irrigated furrows
  • at a spacing of 0.54 cm2 (90 x 60 cm) providing fuller utilization of incoming solar radiation.

Approximately 35,000 single budded setts are required for planting one hectare land.
